My name is Carolyn Dallman Downes and this is my able assistant, Mr. Casey. We live in Toronto, Canada. By day, we are lowly mental-health peons, running a psychotherapy practice, but by night, we are intrepid artists, trafficking in fine art, dance, film-making and of course, photography.
A few years ago, I stumbled upon a photograph at a garage sale that was unlike anything I had seen before. It was an “Impressionist” photo, which used “intentional camera motion” (ICM) and digital technology to produce new a new kind of photography–one that more accurately resembles an impressionist painting or an abstract work of art. My creativity exploded as I explored this new, cutting-edge approach to photography. . .
Before the advent of photography, artists were mainly employed in the creation of realistic images of their subjects. However, once cameras could faithfully represent reality, artists began to experiment with alternative representations of the world around them. This gave rise to the Impressionist and Abstract Movements, where artists tried to convey a sense or an impression, of their subjects.
Similarly, at the beginning of the 21st century, the advent of digital technology has opened up a whole new field of Impressionist and Abstract Photography, which also tries to convey more of a sense of the subjects in the artist’s view.
When I discovered this strange and novel work of art at my neighbour’s garage sale, I tracked down the artist from a label on the back of the print and discovered the world of Impressionist Photography.
I spent the next 10 years studying the work of Eva Polak, Yuri Malkov, Don Davis and dozens of other artists. Like the Impressionist artists of the last century, they are pioneering a radical new field of digital art.
I learned about the new, intuitive IOS apps that allow the artist to actually “paint” on the photograph. Eventually, people began asking to purchase my works, so I put together this site.
